Defensive Walls

Can you imagine the oval shape of the borders of the old Luban and its medieval fortifications? Two lines of walls, 32 towers and 4 large gates - this is how the town's fortifications looked until the middle of the 19th century.

The origins of Luban's stone fortifications should be sought in the darkness of the first two decades of the 14th century. Their construction was a long and costly process. The length of one line of walls was about 1,400 metres, and one has to bear in mind that Lubań had two lanes of fortifications.

The older inner wall was about 8 metres high and 2.5 metres thick. The younger ring was about 3.5 m high and just over 1 m thick. Luban had 4 entrances: Bratska, Zgorzelecka, Nowogrodziecka and Mikolajska. The junction of the Bratska and Nowogrodziecka Gates was closed by a barbican.

In the 19th century it was decided that the medieval fortifications and narrow entrances were an obstacle to the development of the city. Conservationists did not allow the entire fortification to be demolished, so fragments of the ramparts, three towers and the Bracka tower have survived to this day.
