Trinity Tower

The Trinity Tower is a remnant of the former Church of the Holy Trinity, which served as a parish church from the 13th century. The name Trinity Tower comes from the Latin 'trinitas', meaning trinity. In 1320, Crown Prince Henry I of Javorník founded the Monastery of St Mary Magdalene in Lubań and granted it patronage over the aforementioned church.

The Church of the Holy Trinity was originally an oriental building built on a cruciform plan in the Romanesque style. The tower was attached to the nave on the west side. In the 15th century, extensive changes were made to the structure of the church, giving it distinct Gothic features. Both the tower and the church were built of basalt rubble and brick.

It has not been rebuilt since 1760, when it was destroyed by fire. In the 19th century, the body of the church was demolished, leaving only the tower, which stands up-to-date.

Interesting Facts:

1. During the summer (time of natural droughts and hot weather), some scaffolding was erected around the church and water barrels were placed on top to increase the chances of saving the building in the event of a fire.

2. Bearing witness to the city's troubled history, the Trinity Tower is a symbol of faith and local patriotism. The legend of the Hussite invasion of 1427 tells of the bloody massacre of the inhabitants. As the invaders marched through the town, Jeremiasz Groll, the parish priest at the time, called on the townspeople to resist from the windows of the Trinity Tower. The brave men spotted the belligerent priest, dragged him down from the tower and tied him to four horses, which tore the body of Luban's first martyr to pieces as they fled. Then they burst into the church, which was full of people and accompanied by a singing church choir they slaughtered everyone except for one boy who hid under the cloak of his deceased teacher. This was Johann Kraker, who later became the parish priest of Lwówek Śląski. Shortly after the massacre the blood of the victims was collected and kept as a reminder of the tragic events.
