Kramar Tower & Tret

In the central part of the square there is a complex of townhouses overlooked by the Kramar Tower. This tower is a remnant of the medieval town hall and one of the oldest monuments in Luban, and its name refers to the stalls that once surrounded it. The Cloth Hall was the economic and administrative heart of the town. The centre of Lubań is also known as the tret. Interestingly, tret is a Polish word first used in 1580 to refer to the Cloth Hall in Poznań. According to historians, the word may refer to the Latin 'theatrum' (a place where something happens) or the German 'tretten' (to walk, to cross). The townhouses that now surround the tower are the result of a revitalisation project carried out in the 1990s. The original buildings were badly damaged during the battles for Lubań in 1945.
